Pioneer of 1850

MATTHEW WHITE
1802-1855


Matthew White was born in 1802 in Greene County, Tennessee. He came with his family to Sauvie Island in October of 1850. Information in the Oregon Pioneers, Vol. II, says they came from Iowa. He passed away in 1855. His wife was Juretta Thomas, born 1814. They were married September 7th 1830 (DLC # 1978).


1832 Birth of Son William P was born in Indiana. He married Lizzie France in 1859. In 1880 they were living in Scappoose, OR.


1834 Birth of Son John P. was born in Indiana.


1837 Birth of Daughter Hulda M; was born in Iowa. She married William Bybee in 1858.


1840 Birth of Son Mathew Levi was born in Iowa.


1841 Birth of Son Shallum Parsons was born in Iowa on February 8th (Old City Cemetery records, abstracted by Gerry Gillman for the Clark County Genealogical Society, Trail Breakers, Fall 1997, pg 17).


1846 Birth of Daughter Ellen E was born in Iowa. She married Robert Reed in 1862.

1849 Birth of Daughter Mary A. was born in Iowa.


1850 Donation Land Claim #1978 Mathew's land was located in Washington County, T2N, RI W, Sections 8, 9, 15, 16, consisting of 631 acres.

1854 Birth of Daughter

Jewella Caroline was born in Oregon. She married Thomas Nelson Grubbe in 1864.

1856 Death of Settler Matthew White passed away on March 15'h. His probate is filed in Multnomah County Early records, No. 13.

1858 Marriage of Daughter

 

 Hulda married William Bybee, a cousin of James Bybee of Sauvie Island. They were married on October 10th, by John Lisle, J. P. The witnesses were William White and James Walker (Multnomah County Marriage Records, 1855-1873, GFO book pg 8).


They are listed in the 1860 census for Jackson County, Oregon. Bybee, Wm T age 40, Huldy age 22 ,


In 1880 William and a son Martin are listed living with the Daniel Caldwell family in Lost River, Lake Co., OR.


1859 Marriage of Son

William White of Sauvie Island married Miss Lizzie France on December 25 th at the home of R. W. Thompson on Sauvie Island. They were married by Ellis Walker, J. P. The witnesses were Mrs. Bybee, Mr. Payne and M. Able (Multnomah County Marriages, 1855-1873, pg 11 of the GFO Book).

1934 Death of Son of Settler

Shallum Parson passed away of heart failure on March 30th. The Knapp Mortuary records state that his age was 93 years, 1 month and 22 days. He is buried at the Old City cemetery, NE Lot 31-4, line 15.


1934 Death of Son's Widow

Shallum's wife, Catherine Emma Monastes died a little over 2 months after the death of her husband on May 18th The Knapp Mortuary records say that she died of complications from a broken hip. She was survived by Otis White, Shallum White Jr. of Vancouver, WA, Henry White, of Portland,OR, Arnold White of Los Angeles, Ca, Calvin White of Oakland, Ca, Mrs. Alice Schneider of Portland, Or, and Mrs. L. E. Winget of Baxter Springs, Kansas (info from Knapp Mortuary records).
